Upstream Oil and Gas
The upstream oil and gas segment is all about wells: where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint.

Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are segmented and organized according to business segment, assets, or function.
Upstream oil and gas is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering and producing crude oil and natural gas.

Key Upstream Oil and Gas Segments:
Exploration: The Search for Oil and Gas
The Exploration module focuses on management of the technical and commercial upstream activities used to find and develop new hydrocarbon reserves, often simply called Exploration.
Each lesson in this module offers explanations of exploration processes, including the technical and commercial language, business drivers, decision processes and the future trends.
Drilling – Getting To The Reserves
The Drilling and Oilfield Services Module provides an overview of well drilling operations and introduces the oilfield service providers and drilling contractors that assist E&P companies to efficiently extract oil and gas.
The first step in adding value by the exploration activity is to locate and get to the oil and gas reservoir fluids that are below the surface.
The real test of all the preliminary analysis is to drill a well to ensure the prospective hydrocarbons exist.
Drilling rigs, technology, equipment and processes focus on getting this complex task done as efficiently and safely as possible.
In the future, there will be new technical challenges and to extract hydrocarbons in deeper and ever more hostile and complex environments.
This module focuses on efficiently drilling the well. Completing the well to make it fully productive is covered in the Production and Offshore Construction module.
Production: Getting Hydrocarbons Out To The Surface
The Production and Offshore Construction Module provides a high level overview of production operations and introduces the offshore contractors and production service providers that assist E&P companies to efficiently produce oil & gas.
Once oil or gas are found with a wildcat or discovery well, the next step in adding value to reserves is to get the reservoir fluids brought to the surface, or “produce” them.
Production technology, equipment and processes also focus on maintaining the well throughout its economic life and the necessary processing facilities.
These modules explore management of the technology of well completions, field development plans and facilities, often called production operations, and much more.
